Teeth Whitening

What is teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening involves treating teeth which are stained or discolored over a period of time, due to smoking, intake of certain medications, or certain foodstuffs and beverages which includes coffee, tea.

How is the procedure of teeth whitening performed?

It involves a chemical process, and your dentist may perform it using any of the two ways:

  • In a dental clinic
  • At home method (where you will be able to do it yourself with the guidance of your dentist).

How is teeth whitening done?

  • A custom made mouthpiece tray is made which ensures appropriate quantity of whitening solution reaching your teeth.
  • Though procedure at home is comfortable and convenient, it takes longer period (2-4 weeks) whereas it takes one or more 1- to 2-hour visits to a clinic for the results.

What precautions should you take after teeth whitening procedure?

  • Avoid exposing yourself to the same substances that caused stain originally as it can recur.
  • Practicing oral hygiene daily
  • Brush your teeth twice a day,
  • Practice flossing and rinsing using antiseptic mouth rinse regularly.

Bonding

When is bonding recommended?

It is recommended in cases where your appearance may be affected due to:

  • Excessive space between teeth,
  • Chipped teeth, broken, or cracked teeth
  • Stained teeth.
  • Fill small cavities
  • Exposed root of a tooth.

How is bonding performed?

It is performed in a single visit to a dental clinic as follows:

  • Etching of the tooth surface by applying a solution causing etching of tooth
  • Then tooth -colored materials (such as composite resins) are applied onto the surface of the tooth directly.

Veneers

What are veneers?

They are made up of mostly porcelain or may be plastic, which are actually custom shells, covering the teeth on the front (visible part of the teeth) which helps to impart aesthetic color and/or shape to that tooth or teeth.

When are veneers recommended?

It is recommended in cases where your appearance may be affected due to:

  • Excessive space between teeth,
  • Chipped teeth, worn, broken, or cracked teeth
  • Slightly crooked or irregularly shaped teeth.
  • Stained teeth.
  • Fill small cavities
  • Exposed root of a tooth.

Why are veneers preferred over bonding?

Veneers are preferred over bonding due to following properties:

  • Durability which helps them to last for a longer duration
  • Imparts better look than bonding.

What procedure is carried out if you have to receive veneers?

Following steps are carried out:

  • Impression of your tooth will be taken by the dentist,
  • Tooth buffing before cementing of veneers
  • Finally light beam is passed to harden the cement, bonding veneer to the tooth.
  • In cases of certain veneers which require fabrication in laboratories (such as porcelain veneers) second visit to a dental clinic for insertion is essential.

What is meant by enamel shaping and contouring?

It is a dental procedure in which the dental enamel is removed or reshaped (contoured) for providing your teeth with better appearance.

When is it recommended?

It is recommended when there is need to alter the tooth with respect to its position, shape or length as seen in cases with:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Unusual teeth
  • Minor problems related to bite.
