Eruption, Shedding, and Everything in Between

All primary (baby) teeth and secondary/permanent (adult) teeth start to form before birth. This article discusses all the phases and changes relevant to the eruption of milk teeth erupt into the mouth (emerge through the gums) and their shedding

The first teeth to erupt in the mouth are the lower and upper central incisors at 6 to 12 months. Usually, the lower incisors appear first. Next, the eruption of lower and upper lateral incisors occurs between 9 to 16 months. The lower and upper first erupt next followed lastly by before the lower and upper canine (cuspid) teeth. By two years of age, all teeth normally erupt except for second molars which can emerge anytime just
between the ages of 2 and 3 years.

Tooth eruption occurs at a younger age in girls as compared to boys, and they typically erupt in pairs of one on the left and one on the right. Normally after 4 years of age, the jaw and facial bones of your child start to grow at a greater pace making space for their larger adult (permanent) teeth.

A child usually starts losing (shedding baby teeth at age 6 in relatively the same order as they emerge: first the central incisor (at 6 to 7 years) followed by the lateral incisors (at 7 to 8 years), first molars (at 9 to 11 years), and lastly the canines (at 10 to 12 years). Between ages 6 and 12, your child will be seen with a mix of both primary and permanent teeth.
As it can be seen from the above discussion, baby teeth remain within the mouth for only a few years. Yet they are very important to your child’s well-being during early childhood and later throughout life. Here’s why:

  1. They are essential for chewing and attaining good nutrition.
  2. They aid in the development of speech.
  3. They give the face a normal appearance.
  4. They maintain space for proper placement of adult teeth
  5. They also protect the permanent teeth if they remain decay and infection-free. Excessively decayed baby teeth can become filled with pus (infected) and lost prematurely. It can also causes the spread of infection to other areas like jaw bone or ears. Primary teeth that are damaged or destroyed, cannot properly guide your permanent teeth into their appropriate position. This can result in crowded or crooked permanent teeth and may necessitate braces treatment later in life.

So it is very important to pay due attention to your child’s primary teeth by scheduling regular dental examinations and have any dental decay or tooth damage immediately treated.
Pediatricians, Pedodontists as well as the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that a child should be first examined by a pediatric dentist at age one.
